Nature of work in ISRO

I got this info from a friend working as isro Scientist/Engineer. take it as some one’s personal opinion only. Any way this will be useful if you are planning to join ISRO.

about isro…
it’s a central government job..the pay packet you get may not be as high as the private sector…even if the 6th pay commission comes it may not be very high..
the work culture at isro is great…no much work loads as in a private company…no tension…friendly work environment..

you are treated in a friendly manner over here..no matter whether he is in your age group or the director..
you have not yet been told the centre to which you will be posted… if it is trivandrum, well and good for a government employee…living expense is less compared to Bangalore or Ahmadabad….money is also a necessity in life….
On the whole, isro is the best your country can give you….it’s the most respectable job in the country and well recognized in the world….(you r already working in an international company)….

at isro, it’s a great opportunity to learn about space vehicle technology  (but this also depends on the dept. you get into)..even if you want to leave isro at any time the next job you try for, could be more better…

at isro, no tension…slow and steady growth… in a private company…initial growth may be faster…but it all depends on your mindset…take your time to decide…. ask many others as well….all the best…

The job you have got is permanent…up to the age of 60.. The clause given in the advertisement is the same for any permanent govt. job.. It has been so ever since independence..So nobody can kick you out of here…even if u don’t work… Working hours-9 to5pm..free transport will be provided anywhere in tvm… Even if you want to go early some days you r free to do so..At present no service agreement for us… may be in the near future…because many leave the job and go for higher paying jobs… hence it may not be now…but in the near future…if you want to leave the job and go you r free to do so…but the govt. spends a lot on you indirectly (free transport, subsidized food, free medical for you and your dependents etc..)..so it depends on your consciousness if you want to leave within an year or sometime later….Once you r posted at a place, they will not transfer you unless u request…but if ur request must be accepted, you may have to wait for 3 years…otherwise only mutual transfer option is there. I am now at vssc… even if i am to leave this job… maybe only after a min. of 5 years…Saturdays are not working…but if u get in a dept. directly related to launch campaigns..maybe some Saturdays nearing the launch time…There r 8 casual leaves, 2 special casual leaves, 30 earned leave;i.e; you can take leave for a period of 30 days an year and still get paid for it…if you don’t take your earned leave it will go on accumulating and you can claim for it( as money) when u leave the job… all national holidays r holidays for us….
Your job profile is really good…ask somebody Else’s advice also of what to do…you may have faster initial growth in a private company…compared to govt.jobs…the salary u get at isro will be somewhat equivalent to the our software company pay once the 6th pay commission comes…but thereafter growth in salary in a govt. job is slow, but steady…

My problem is also something similar. In isro site i saw the result as “You have been selected and offer to be issued”. some active discussion is going on in isro-2008 orkut community [http://www.orkut.co.in/Community.aspx?cmm=49839308]. some people called isro and they r telling there is waiting list. any way i will call my friend in isro and if i get some info , i will post here. :)

    Hi Shamzu

i am applying for the post of Administrative Officer in isro. but the issue is that isro has asked for MBA with 1 yr exp, whereas i have an Executive MBA (Gold Medalist), albeit from a good university. when i registered online for the post, there was no provision to specify Executive MBA. moreover there is an alternative for the qualification i.e. graduate with 5 year supervisiory experience. in fact i am a graduate architect having 12 years experience in various govt org out of which 7 years are in indian railways in a supervisory capacity. do you think isro authorities will consider my qualifications ?

    pl reply.

do you have any idea about the pattern of questions asked in isro written exam ? pl help.

  11. November 4, 2008 at 6:32 pm | #11

    Hi Nibedita,

I am sorry that i have very limited knowledge about these kind of things. send a mail to recruitement section (rpc@isro.gov.in) clearly stating your issue. they can help for sure.
regarding the test, for ’scientist/engineers’ basic questions from their own area were asked.
wish you all the best for your future.

    Hi,

First of all, thank you for starting this blog and keeping it updated. Nice work

I am in Infosys, Mysore now undergoing training. was a 2008 passout in CSE. I need to know how much is the take home salary at ISRO for your post. I have always wished to work in ISRO, but since I got the placement, I was very lazy to study for it ;) Also my cousin is working at VSSC He said that they only select those with top marks. What was your % for BTech ?

    • February 7, 2009 at 11:17 am | #20

      @Anoop
hi, now we are getting around 31200in hand (in bangalore) . also recently we got a 20 % extra increment for all posts. Govt also decided to give some performance incentives from this year onwards, so as compared to a central govt job, salary is very good.
Don’t worry about % much. Cut off is 65%. I think interview will be a piece of cake if have more than 70 (i had 75). If you have a good knowledge in basics of your stream you don’t have to worry about the % much.

    Hi Shamz,
Nice to see you are helping many ppl like us…
I am currently working in an PNB as Dy. Manager IT but I am not satisfied with work and salary so I am looking forward to ISRO exam. But ISRO has asked for the NOC if you are working in PSUs….But that I wont be able to give now bcoz I have 2yrs bond here and asking my HRD dept for NOC will cause problem as they will get hint that I intend to leave. I joined PNB 3 months back only. This I can give if I got selected by paying full bond amount.
So is there any chance that I can skip NOC and produce if I got selected.
    Could you please confirm this.
    I will really appreciate it
    Thx in advance….

    Hi all

Its is great that most of the questions have been answered. I have applied for ISRO 26th Aprl 2009 Test for scientist Electronics. I have done M.Tech in VLSI from IIIT-H after that did 6 months Intern in IBM. My doubt is, ISRO has asked for B.Tech’s and there is no option for M.Tech in application. I completed my B.Tech in 2006 with 85%. Will I be able to clear initial screening. Also what will be my chance of getting into SCL ( Semi Conductor Laboratory).

    Hello Everybody,

I have googled a lot on the syllabus on which the isro exam is based. I have hardly got a clear cut answer. If you go to see there is a lot to study in the 4 years of electronics stream. I would like to know which topics do i prepare extensively on. Another question is out of 80 questions how many do i attempt to fix my chances in ISRO. I have an Aggregate of 70.2% in engineering.

    Thanks

    Hi Shamzu,

I got selected for ISRO SC-mechanical, I saw the results on net and didn’t get the offer letter though.

I wanted to know how much time ISRO gives before joininig. I am asking this because I have a notice period of 3 months in my present company and want to know if they give sufficient time.

would you advice me to resign now or wait for the offer letter… statement in the net read’s like this —-”You have been selected for the above mentioned post.Your offer letter has been dispatched by Registered/Speed post”.

One more thing is that If say my company does not relieve me on time would isro consider extending the period. I did a mistake though while filling up the application I wrote it as 1 month. Please advice…..

you can mail me @ madhu_kiran23@yahoo.co.in.

i will be highly thankfull to u if u could guide me…
i really want to contribute in isro which option will be better for me

    • March 24, 2009 at 9:07 am | #64

      @Pradeep singh,
Congratulations dude..great work. If you really want to contribute to isro, the best option is now going for IISC and then you can join here. the reasons are..
1.if you have an mtech in your favorite field, it is easy for getting in to a related group.
2.you are not losing years. you will be posted as Scientist Engineer ‘SC’. Promotion from SC to SD for Btech people requires min 4 yrs of service, where as for Mtech, you need only 2yrs of service.
3.If you want to do Mtech in isro sponsored seats, you should wait for minimum 5 years.

salary is around 31000 in hand in Bangalore. which subject you are planning to take for Mtech?

    Hi Shamzu/Hi everyone,

I have 5 years experience in IT industry in a very reputed company after my B-Tech in IT.

Do you think they place everyone in the same grade (who clears the Scientist – SC post) irrespective of a fresher or an experienced person.

My question is : Will I get only the salary which the freshers are drawing or will they determine my salary and grade based on my total experience and current CTC.

    Regards,
    Deepthi

I can only comment on mechanical as I am from mech. Last year I got thru written with 48 correct answers. Alas, couldn’t clear the interview. This year I attempted 55 questions out of which I don’t know how many are correct. Expecting at most 5-6 are wrong. But my feeling is that, this year’s paper was a bit tougher than the previous year’s. I think, cutoff will be smthing between 45-50. Fingers crossed!!!

Thank you very much for such a useful blog..
I am also shortlisted for interview…I am very good at Analog Electronics,Digital Electronics,Linear Integrated Circuits..but not so good in Antenna,Radar,Satellite Communications..And I have heard that interviewer asks your favorite subject..So should I stick to Analog & Digital Electronics…(I will prepare Antenna etc. too but I am more confident for A & D Electronics)..Do they prefer candidates having command in Antenna etc. or command in only A & D Electronics may suffice? Is % very deciding factor?(I got 79% in DCE).Is there any reservation for OBCs?

    Please reply..
    Thank you in anticipation..

      Hello Chandra mowli,
I myself registered my name at the employment office, Bangalore, immediately after the final semester results were announced. Then after three months I got a call letter from LPSC,ISRO,Bangalore, to attend the interview.
I was really very excited to see the call letter, then I asked one of my relative regarding this apprentice training and the very important interview process. He gave me the valuable guidelines, accordingly I went well prepared for the interview.

Now coming to the interview process, there were nothing like written test/aptitude or bla bla bla. There was only two rounds, first was the verification round in which they verified our degree certificates and especially the Provisional Degree certificate(PDC) if u r from B.E back ground.

Then coming to second round, it was a tough round, around 9-10 officers were sitting round the table and it was a face to face interview. Actually they screwed every candidate, but luckily by god’s grace I answered their questions well and got selected. They announced the results after 2 days of the intrvw date.

Then they called me to collect the Attestation forms, to get the sign of the gazetted officer. I completed all the formalities within 2 days and after submitting the forms in person. They they told me that after the police verification process they r going to call us. And I am waiting for that CALL. Really I’m very desperate to join ASAP.

I hope u are satisfied with this information.

      Thanks and regards,
      Vasu
