Smarter Than Human Intelligence

August 26, 2008 shamzu Leave a comment

Is it possible for a computer to become more intelligent than a human being? definitely yes. Evolution says life is evolved from growing crystals in circulating climatic conditions. If such a crystal is evolved in to this much complex intelligence, then what will be the fate of fast growing computation. definitely it can reach a complexity of human mind without taking millions of years.

The main player in this scenario is Artificial intelligence. ie ability of machines to improve themselves. Machines can surpass human intelligence if they can improve themselves in a way unforseen by the designer.

Quick sort

An animated image demonstrating the Quicksort algorithm used to sort a list of items in computer programming. First, a pivot is selected from the list, then the list is partitioned so that the values greater than the pivot come after it and those of lower value come before it. This act is recursively performed until the entire list is sorted.

Here is the google map view most discussed ramasethu. try zooming ang panning. ya. The name Rama’s Bridge or Rama Setu was given to this bridge of shoals in Rameshwaram, as Hindu legend identifies it with the bridge built by the Vanara (monkey-men) army of Rama , which he used to reach Sri Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the Rakshasa king, Ravana, as stated in the Sanskrit epic Ramayana.
A few organizations are opposing damage to Ramasethu on religious, environmental and economical grounds.
Click here to view the wikipediaia article about rama sethu. it describes this structure as a chain of shoals, coral reefs or a ridge formed in the region owing to thinning of the earth’s crust. And these kind of structures can be found many places around the world. you can pan little more and find it by yourself.
even there is 5 alternative alignments considered earlier without damaging a structure considered sacred by Hindus.

Nature of work in ISRO

August 13, 2008 shamzu 156 comments

I got this info from a friend working as isro Scientist/Engineer. take it as some one’s personal opinion only. Any way this will be useful if you are planning to join ISRO.

about isro…
it’s a central government job..the pay packet you get may not be as high as the private sector…even if the 6th pay commission comes it may not be very high..
the work culture at isro is great…no much work loads as in a private company…no tension…friendly work environment..

you are treated in a friendly manner over here..no matter whether he is in your age group or the director..
you have not yet been told the centre to which you will be posted… if it is trivandrum, well and good for a government employee…living expense is less compared to Bangalore or Ahmadabad….money is also a necessity in life….
On the whole, isro is the best your country can give you….it’s the most respectable job in the country and well recognized in the world….(you r already working in an international company)….

at isro, it’s a great opportunity to learn about space vehicle technology  (but this also depends on the dept. you get into)..even if you want to leave isro at any time the next job you try for, could be more better…

at isro, no tension…slow and steady growth… in a private company…initial growth may be faster…but it all depends on your mindset…take your time to decide…. ask many others as well….all the best…

The job you have got is permanent…up to the age of 60.. The clause given in the advertisement is the same for any permanent govt. job.. It has been so ever since independence..So nobody can kick you out of here…even if u don’t work… Working hours-9 to5pm..free transport will be provided anywhere in tvm… Even if you want to go early some days you r free to do so..At present no service agreement for us… may be in the near future…because many leave the job and go for higher paying jobs… hence it may not be now…but in the near future…if you want to leave the job and go you r free to do so…but the govt. spends a lot on you indirectly (free transport, subsidized food, free medical for you and your dependents etc..)..so it depends on your consciousness if you want to leave within an year or sometime later….Once you r posted at a place, they will not transfer you unless u request…but if ur request must be accepted, you may have to wait for 3 years…otherwise only mutual transfer option is there. I am now at vssc… even if i am to leave this job… maybe only after a min. of 5 years…Saturdays are not working…but if u get in a dept. directly related to launch campaigns..maybe some Saturdays nearing the launch time…There r 8 casual leaves, 2 special casual leaves, 30 earned leave;i.e; you can take leave for a period of 30 days an year and still get paid for it…if you don’t take your earned leave it will go on accumulating and you can claim for it( as money) when u leave the job… all national holidays r holidays for us….
Your job profile is really good…ask somebody Else’s advice also of what to do…you may have faster initial growth in a private company…compared to govt.jobs…the salary u get at isro will be somewhat equivalent to the our software company pay once the 6th pay commission comes…but thereafter growth in salary in a govt. job is slow, but steady…

ISRO Scientist/Engineer SC -Interview

August 13, 2008 shamzu 473 comments

I got into isro too. basically i am mad of science. and to become a scientist is my child hood dream. I applied on line for this isro Scientist/Engineer SC post on march. I got the notification from job opportunities section of isro web site. initially they will conduct a screening based on your bio-data and select people for written test. then if you clear written test they will call you for the interview.

Eligibility:
* BE/B.Tech in First Class or equivalent with an aggregate minimum of 65% (average of all semesters for which results are available).
* Candidates who are slated to complete the BE/B.Tech course in the academic year 2007-08 are also eligible to apply provided final Degree is available by 31.08.2008

Pay and Allowances:
They mentioned it is Rs. 8,000-275-13,500. but i calculated the revised salary asper 6th pay commission

as on 1st July 2008
Total Fixed Pay Rs. 20286
Dearness Allowance (@23%)Rs. 4666
HRA : 30% ie. 6202
Transport Allowance : Rs. 3936

refer http://staffcorner.com/sixpc.php

I choose trivandrum test center and for joining i preferred Bangalore in online application ( since i am from ECE, and they do most of the electronics work in Bangalore :) )

Written test:

As expected they called me for the written test. it was on 28 april. For ECE, questions are mainly from basic electronics, micro controllers,LIC, Network theory, and very few questions from OS. Don’t worry, they will ask only very basic questions. Out of 80 i could answer almost 60 questions.

They declared test result in web site within two weeks. my interview date was 27 Th June. One more week passed and i didn’t received interview call letter. i send a mail to rpc@isro.gov.in. surprisingly i got the reply within a day. they gave a link to download the call letter in case of not receiving hard copy.

prior to Interview:

some guys who attended the interview said they will ask for your favorite subject. so i prepared communication engineering for that.

i went to trivandrum a day before interview so that i can stay with my friend who is working in isro in the same post. According to him following are the pleasant and unpleasant facts about isro.
:) It has got one of the excellent library in India.
:) Permanent job. so much freedom.
:) Scope for continuing your studies.
:) no tension. friendly work environment..

:( If you are planning for an excellent career, isro is not a nice place. It is like any other govt job. you can come to office and if you want you can simply sit.
:( isro holds the 7th place among 7 countries who invest in space research.
:( Internal politics.
:( Most of the projects done here are just a copy of what others did.
:( isro cannot prevent brain drain. Many isro people jump to good companies after 4 -5 yrs.

For me none of these cons are important for selecting my career. so i decided to go ahead.

Interview:
it took around 20- 25 minutes. the panel is having 9 or 10 scientist. the senior scientist sitting at the middle asked most of the questions. we will be standing in front of a board where we have to draw diagrams if asked. i remember some of the questions.

> Shamsudheen, which subject you have prepared?
-communication engineering.
he asked many questions from transmission line characteristics, stub matching, wave guides, etc. I said what these things are. but he asked to tell basic concepts like why there is only TE or TM mode in wave guide and not TEM.
I know very little about transmission lines.I asked him to change the topic.
then they asked questions generally from electronics basics like
> what is modulation?
> different kinds of modulation
> draw the circuit if demodulator
> what is the output of not gate for sine wave input?
> how to shift a sine wave up or down?
> different kinds of modulation

they asked about my project.I did my project in Wipro technologies, Basically it is a java based application to control multi-functional printer networks. may be it is in java they didn’t asked questions from project.
also they asked if i have any other offer and in which company. I said bosch.

After Interview:

I thought i spoiled my interview with that transmission lines part. Sitll i had some hope. I joined bosch in July and isro published the result in July last week. Awoo… I got selected. :)

i saw some people in bosch who jumped from isro. One of my colleque in bosch, Danish also got in to isro this time. He got a mail from one of his friend working in isro regarding the nature of work in isro. Click here to read.
